Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana keeps the farmer's share of the premium low — a small percentage of the sum insured for Kharif and Rabi crops, and a higher share for commercial and horticultural crops — with the government meeting the rest. For a loanee farmer it is often already tied to the crop loan; for everyone else it is voluntary and easy to miss.

The part that catches people out is the calendar. Enrolment closes on a fixed date per season per state, and there is no enrolment after it, whatever the weather does afterwards.

Crop Insurance — common questions

Is crop insurance compulsory?

It is voluntary for all farmers. Loanee farmers are commonly enrolled through their crop loan by default, but can opt out by informing the bank before the cut-off date.

When do I have to enrol?

Before the enrolment deadline for that season in your state — one for Kharif, one for Rabi. The dates are fixed and there is no enrolment after them, so check yours as soon as you decide what to sow.

How is the claim decided?

Mainly by crop-cutting experiments at the notified unit level rather than on your individual field, so a payout depends on the yield across the whole unit. Localised risks such as hailstorm and inundation are the exception and are assessed for your own plot.
